Black lizard is not black calfskin, and the difference is the whole story. Under light, the scales catch and release a sheen like polished jet, so the bag has movement where plain black leather would be a flat silhouette. This colourway makes the 19cm Kelly Mini 2 look the most formal it can look, and I would carry it to a serious evening without a second thought.
South African lizard gives the tightest, most regular scales available, and the finish here keeps them subtle rather than lacquered. Silver hardware all but disappears against noir, which is exactly what you want from metal on an evening bag: visible only when it needs to be.
Inside, the usual careful arithmetic applies, phone, cards, keys, lipstick, and the firm panels keep the shape architectural all evening. The top handle is balanced, and the whole bag sits neatly in the palm when you carry it to the table.
The limitation is equally clear: this is a leather for considered use, not for the bottom of a tote. Corners are its sensitive points, and it dislikes friction from coarse wool. Kept in its dust bag between outings, it will stay the most quietly elegant thing in a wardrobe full of black.
Between black calf and black lizard the difference is entirely in the light; lizard is the one people notice without knowing why, and the one that feels special on an ordinary evening too. I have never regretted choosing the shinier of two blacks.
