Etoupe is grey and taupe and greige depending on the hour, and it is the most capable neutral I have ever carried. Colour 18 has a slight brown lean under warm light and a cool, stony cast in the shade, which means it sits happily between black and beige instead of forcing you to choose a side. Silver hardware underlines the cooler moods.
Part of what makes Etoupe a name people know is the pale stitching running alongside the taupe panels, a fine outline that stops the bag from looking flat. On Epsom, with its even pressed grain, the contrast reads crisp rather than decorative — and the leather’s firmness keeps every line of that geometry in place.
A phone, my flat cardholder, keys and lipstick fit the frame — 19 wide, 12 tall, 5.5 deep. I have worn mine with charcoal suits, with camel coats, with olive and with denim, and I have never once felt it was the wrong bag.
My honest hesitation is about contrast, not quality: taupe can go muddy next to mid-grey knitwear, because similar greys stacked together absorb each other. The bag wants a white shirt, a black coat or something distinctly light or dark behind it. Given that, it is the neutral I would recommend to anyone assembling a small wardrobe.
