Rouge Coeur is a proper red, no orange, no blue lean, and on chèvre calfskin it comes out saturated and even, like ink on good paper. A friend once described this bag as the colour of a ripe cherry seen indoors, and that is close enough. Chèvre is the leather I recommend to anyone who wants colour that stays true: its fine grain drinks dye deeply, so even after a year of use the red has not gone flat on me.
I use this size for dinners and long lunches where I do not want to think about a bag. Phone, cardholder, lip balm and keys fit comfortably, and the top handle slides over a wrist so it never has to sit on the floor. The gold hardware warms the red further; against silver, the same leather would look sharper and colder, more graphic.
One thing chèvre does that Epsom will not: it relaxes slightly at the corners with wear, and the bag gains a softness that suits a red this friendly. It is not fragile, but light-coloured clothes and heavy rings are its main enemies, as with any supple leather.
If you are deciding between this and a red in a stiffer hide, pick this one for evenings and travel, when a bag should feel like a companion rather than a box. Red this pure earns its place in a wardrobe with surprising speed.
