The Elan in black is the least dramatic bag on this page and, for many, the most useful: a long, flat, unshowy shape in resilient Chèvre goatskin, a long, flat body barely a hand’s height in depth, with silver hardware kept small. Goatskin’s tight grain catches the light in fine speckle rather than gloss, so the black stays black instead of turning into a mirror. Worn across the body under a coat, it disappears except when you need it.
What fits: phone, cardholder, keys, lipstick, and — because the format is flat — a folded printout or two, which the bag accepts without swelling. This is my airport bag, my museum bag, my dinner bag; it does not care what the occasion is, and that is precisely the point of owning one in black.
Two honest notes. The flat silhouette has a fixed capacity, so if you carry a power bank, a pouch and a water bottle, this is the wrong shape for you; the Elan rewards the person who leaves things at home. And Chèvre, being a natural-grained leather, will show a slight pull at the strap anchor over the years — structural, unproblematic and typical of the tannage. Mine is on year two with no such mark yet.
For someone deciding between exciting and inevitable: this is inevitable, in the best sense. Under an arm or across the body, it makes almost no silhouette at all, and that restraint is its genius.
