Black on black: this is the quietest version of a Kelly 28 I have handled. Box calf in Noir, hardware finished in black as well, so the turnlock, the plates and the strap hooks all disappear into the surface. From across a room it reads as a single sculpted object rather than a bag with fittings, which is exactly the point of it.
The bag is 28 by 22 by 10 centimetres of evening discipline: a slim wallet, phone, keys, a lipstick, and perhaps a folded scarf if the night runs long. Nothing rattles; no loose change rolls into silent corners. It sits on a dark table unnoticed until someone reaches for a glass beside it and realises what it is.
The honest trade with black hardware is visibility. Small scratches on the fittings show against the matte finish more readily than they would on gold or silver, and Box calf’s shine means a mark on the exterior catches light too. On black, both read as patina sooner than on coloured leather, and I happen to like the effect – it makes the bag look owned.
Rain is the one thing to watch with any Box leather; blot spots immediately rather than rubbing them. Otherwise this is as low-maintenance as a substantial piece of leatherwork gets, since black forgives nearly everything.
For anyone whose wardrobe already skews black, this is the bag that finally makes sense of it.
