Ombre occupies the narrow space between chocolate and espresso, and on lizard it deepens further — the scales hold a low satin sheen that flat calfskin cannot imitate. In daylight you see brown; at a dinner table it reads almost black. I like that kind of quiet.
This is the Kelly 25, 25 x 17 x 7 cm, and the format earns its keep on travel days. On a recent train down to Lyon I had a passport, a card case, my phone, keys, a lip balm and a paperback folded in half inside, with room left for a bottle of water at my feet. The strap came off for dinner; the handle went over my wrist.
Lizard tiles this small take dye beautifully, which is why the brown stays rich rather than muddy. Gold hardware is the right call here: yellow metal against deep brown looks deliberate, where silver can turn it cold. The clochette and padlock are there if you want them, though I often leave mine in the dust bag to keep the profile clean.
What you should know before choosing lizard: the corners of the flap and the base take the most friction, and scales that lose their natural oils will eventually lift. Keep it out of full sun, condition sparingly, and it will outlast most of your wardrobe. A Togo or Epsom Kelly is the tougher daily option; the lizard is the one you reach for when the evening matters.
