The colour is named after the drink, and the comparison survives contact with reality: Chai is warm, milky brown with the faintest grey in it, the tone of a latte someone forgot for ten minutes. On the In the Loop 18 it is a soft, forgiving neutral that reads expensive without ever flashing a logo. It also goes with more than people expect, including navy and olive.
The 18 cm face of the bag suits it: eighteen centimetres across, just under twenty tall, twelve deep, with the loop handle riding nicely over a wrist. Taurillon Clemence’s pebbled grain gives the milky brown some texture, and the gold hardware finishes the cup. In weak winter light the bag reads nearly beige; in summer it turns caramel.
A morning with mine looks like this: phone, a cardholder, keys and a lip balm go in at the door; by eleven a paperback has joined them; at lunch it holds sunglasses while I eat. The open bucket format rewards people who do not want to fight their bags, and Chai rewards people who want one colour to do all the work.
A fairness warning: Chai photographs darker than it reads in person, so if you know the tone only from photos, expect something lighter and creamier in daylight. And like all mid-tone Clemence it will slowly darken where the handle is gripped. I like that the bag learns my hand; you may not.
