Écru and noir is the most graphic combination in the Herbag family — a pale body outlined in black, the way good stationery is printed. I find it the easiest two-tone to wear, because both colours already exist in everything else I own: the écru nods to my summer clothes, the noir to my winter ones. Silver hardware keeps the pair crisp, with nothing warm to muddy the contrast.
The canvas on this Zip 31 is a soft, matte écru rather than a stark white, closer to unbleached cotton, and the noir hunter-cowhide top is deep and even, with a grain that stays fine under the thumb. Where the two meet at the flap, the edge is turned cleanly, and the stitching along the black frame is as straight as the weave allows. It’s a well-mannered object.
Mine is the 31 size: 31 cm wide, 25 cm high, 10 cm deep. That’s a diary, a tablet, a scarf, sunglasses and the day’s small clutter inside, with the back pocket taking a phone so I’m not fishing. The shoulder strap is long; on a tall frame it sits at the hip, and the handle folds down flat for transport.
Honest limitation: the pale body is the sensitive half, and the black trim does nothing to hide the fact, because marks on écru read as shadows even when they’re tiny. Wipe what you can when it happens. What you get for the trouble is the sharpest-looking neutral in the range, and one that will still be making its argument in a decade.
