Brown is the most underrated colour in a bag rotation, and ebene is the best argument for it. This Zip 31 arrives almost black in shade, then opens into a deep tobacco brown in daylight — one bag covering both closets, which is precisely why mine gets more mileage than the obvious black. The gold hardware gives the whole piece the warm cast of an old saddler’s shelf.
In the hand, the ebene canvas has a matte, slightly dry texture that repels grime better than its elegant look suggests. The hunter-cowhide top carries the deepest colour of all, nearly espresso where the light doesn’t reach. Stitching is tonal, so the leather reads as one continuous surface until you get close.
It’s a 31 cm bag, so there’s room for genuinely heavy days: a document folder, a water bottle, a scarf and a small camera have all travelled together without the bag fighting me. The exterior zip pocket swallows a passport or a phone, and the strap is long enough to wear across the body when I’m on a bike.
Two honest trade-offs. The darkness of ebene means the interior is best navigated by feel, so I keep small items in one bright pouch. And gold-tone hardware on dark leather shows fingerprints; a microfibre cloth every fortnight keeps it looking new. Everything else about this bag is patience and quiet competence, which is exactly what I want from a working week.
