True red bags are a test of nerve, and Ruby passes it. This is a clear, deep red, cut with a touch of blue so it never turns orange, and on the twenty-nine centimetre Evelyne it has real presence: worn with black it looks like a deliberate accent, with cream it looks like summer.
Taurillon Clemence gives the red a softly mottled surface rather than a lacquered one, which matters, because glossy reds can look plastic while grained reds look dyed in the hide. The bag relaxes against the body as you walk, and the perforated H casts slight shadows across the front panel in sunlight, which I find endlessly nice to look at.
Everything I need for a weekend fits: phone, wallet, keys, sunglasses, a compact, a paperback and a folded tote for market stops. The rear slip pocket keeps a travel card ready, and the canvas strap shortens far enough to wear under the arm at dinner without changing bags between day and night. The deep red also handles rain uncommonly well, showing almost nothing when a shower catches you out, which is more than the pale shades can promise.
Two things to know before you commit: strong reds are harder to match with an outfit built on clashing prints, and soft leather creases can lighten slightly at the flex points. Mine has stayed remarkably even, and I reach for it whenever a plain outfit needs rescue.
