Etain is slate reimagined as leather, a dark grey with a whisper of warmth so it never turns cold or steely. I took it on as a work bag and it has quietly become the one I trust when I do not want to think about matching: with navy, black, grey and even camel, it simply works.
The twenty-nine centimetre Evelyne takes a folio for papers, a pen case, phone, keys, a compact and a water bottle, and the open top means I can pull the folio out one-handed at a meeting without unclipping anything. Where it stays soft is in carrying: the Clemence body moulds against the hip, so it never bangs into doorways the way a stiff square bag does.
Because the colour is deep, marks are rare and quiet, though I have learned that a dark, soft grey can show light abrasion on the high points over time. Mine has a faint lift in the grain where the strap rubs the shoulder panel, only visible at an angle, and the perforated H has kept its clean outline.
Gold-tone hardware gives the grey a little life and pairs well with the brass on a coat. If you want one Evelyne that reads composed at a desk and easy at dinner, this is the colour I would hand you first. In winter it sits over a heavy coat on the long setting, and the woven canvas has not marked my wool.
