Two chalk-white bags can look like different products depending on the metal they wear, and this one proves it. Where the silver version runs cool and modern, Craie with gold-tone hardware reads softer, closer to cream, and much more willing to sit beside raffia, tan leather sandals and gold jewellery on a summer evening.
Under the colour, the construction is the Evelyne I know: twenty-nine centimetres of Taurillon Clemence with its irregular grain, an open top, a perforated H across the front and a canvas strap that adjusts across shoulder to crossbody lengths. The grain is what makes a colour this pale liveable, because light scatters across it and small marks blur into the surface.
For a long lunch or a garden party I carry a phone, a small card wallet, sunglasses, a compact and a lipstick, all of which sit comfortably with room for a folded shawl. The rear pocket keeps my phone out of the crush of the main compartment, and the bag stays light on the shoulder even after hours. The canvas strap is soft enough not to catch on silk, and I have worn it over a bare shoulder through a long August lunch without a single slip.
Honest note: gold hardware and pale leather both reward a little discipline. I keep mine away from newspaper ink and fresh dark denim, and it has stayed creamy rather than dingy. Treat it kindly and it will be the freshest thing you own.
