Jaune Poussin is named for a chick’s down, and it is softer and paler than the lemon in this collection: a buttercup yellow with a touch of cream in it. In Clemence it has depth rather than glare, so it never looks like a highlighter and never asks for sunglasses. It is a small bag with a large mood.
The format is the familiar small Evelyne, soft-shouldered and light, and the pale color makes it read smaller than it is, which I happen to enjoy. There is nothing precious about carrying a pale yellow bag, which is part of its charm. A phone, keys and a cardholder fit without persuasion, and the bag lies flat against the hip when worn crossbody.
Honest note: pale yellows wear their age in a particular way. The corners deepen into a richer shade first, followed by the strap loops, and no amount of conditioning stops it entirely. I find the effect charming, like patina on a cream enamel jug; a perfectionist would find it hard to live with. A spot of rain is the only enemy I have found so far, and it dries away.
This is a mood purchase, and I mean that as praise. It is what I reach for when the day should feel lighter than the calendar suggests. Silver hardware keeps the tone clean, and the strap adjusts to under-arm length for evenings. It makes grey mornings gentler, and I will take that every time.
