Ardoise is the color of slate roofs after rain, a grey with a green-black undertone, and pairing it with gold hardware creates a small, pleasant tension. Cool leather with warm metal divides people, I know, but the contrast is also what keeps the grey from turning funereal, and I fall firmly on the side of the people who like it. The contrast is the point, and it works.
Clemence keeps the color moody rather than dusty; the pebbled surface shifts between blue-grey and charcoal depending on the light, and the bag slouches just enough to look relaxed on the shoulder. Sixteen centimeters tall, eighteen wide and only five deep, it slips under a coat in winter, which is when I wear it most.
Honest caveat: slate and gold is a specific taste, and under fluorescent light the combination can read slightly older than it does outdoors. If you work in an office with hard overhead lighting and care about that sort of thing, choose the silver version; if you live in daylight, this one is the more interesting bag.
I wear mine with grey flannel, with black, and with cream knits, always across the body with the strap at full length. It is the quiet bag in my rotation that somehow gets noticed anyway, which is my favorite category of anything, bag or otherwise. It has been in rotation for three winters and shows no sign of slowing down.
