Lizard gives a sandal the smallest scales in the exotic family – tight, even, almost beaded – and pairing it with calfskin lets the strap carry both textures at once. In ombre noir the centre of the strap runs deep black while the edges ease toward smoke, a gradient that shifts as the light moves.
The build is the standard flat Chypre: anatomical rubber sole, black rubber outsole, black calfskin insole, black lambskin lining and an adjustable strap, with a half-inch heel and sizes 36 to 41, made in Italy. The calfskin sections give the shoe its structure while the lizard provides the surface.
I wore these to a series of long evening dinners and appreciated how light they felt for a shoe with this much presence – flat, flexible, and comfortable enough to walk home in. The scales on the instep caught every light source in the room, changing the sandal’s appearance from matte to almost metallic depending on the angle.
Styling is straightforward if you let the texture lead: black trousers, a silk skirt, dark denim with a pressed shirt. It also works with white, where the ombre gradient reads as a deliberate graphic line rather than pure contrast. Keep jewellery minimal; the scales are already an ornament.
One thing to be clear about before choosing lizard: it is the most delicate skin in this collection. Scales lift with abrasion, water and dry air, and once lifted they cannot be pressed back. Keep them away from rough stone, condition the hide twice a year, and store them in their bag rather than loose in a suitcase.
