Undyed leather is the most honest material a sandal can wear, because there is nowhere to hide. This Chypre uses natural calfskin with natural goatskin lining, and because the leather carries no pigment the tone changes continuously: pale and dry out of the box, honeyed after a month of summer, darker at every point where your foot grips and the strap folds.
The sole is the familiar anatomical rubber bed, contoured under the arch and flat at the ball of the foot, with one adjustable strap closing over the instep. Sizes 40 to 46, made in Italy, and the shape has enough coverage at the toes for city use rather than just the beach.
What I notice most on wear is temperature. Bare leather breathes differently from a coated finish, and on the hottest afternoons these stay comfortable in a way that a treated sandal does not. They also pair with almost anything the natural tone is beside, from olive to navy to brown belt and watch strap.
One honest note: natural calfskin marks. Rain leaves rings, sun darkens unevenly where the strap crosses and where the sandal contacts the ground, and no cleaner will turn them back. That is the deal you accept in exchange for the patina. If you want a sandal that looks the same in year two as in week one, this is not it. Two months in, mine have gone the colour of milky coffee at the toe and darker under the strap, and I would choose them again over any dyed pair.
