Grey is a colour people choose carefully, because the wrong undertone makes a bag look either icy or dusty. Gris Mayer avoids both: it is a warm, slightly stony grey, the tone of a limestone wall in afternoon light, and with gold hardware it gains a softness that cool greys never have. I reach for it on days when black feels too heavy for the weather.
The 35 frame gives this shade room to work. A small bag in warm grey can look washed out, but at thirty-five centimetres the colour reads as a proper neutral, and Togo’s grain adds the variation that stops it looking flat or painted. In practice, that means it pairs with camel, navy, olive and denim without any negotiation.
What goes inside is close to a full day: a wallet, phone, keys, glasses, a slim folder of papers, a compact and a pouch for odds and ends. The interior zip pocket holds the things you want instantly, and the slip pockets along the back wall are ideal for tickets and cards when you are moving between meetings. The grain also hides the tiny abrasions that come from sitting a bag on restaurant chairs and train seats, which is exactly where a 35 spends most of its life.
Two points of honesty. Warm greys show dirt less than pale greys, but the corners still pick up scuffs over time, and Togo will soften slightly along the top edge with use. Neither bothers me; both are worth knowing before you decide.
