Ask a dozen people who carry this model which colour they reach for most and Etoupe comes up again and again, which surprised me until I owned one. It is a greyed taupe, cool rather than chocolatey, and it lives in the gap between grey, beige and brown so comfortably that it never fights anything in a wardrobe. Gold hardware adds just enough warmth to keep it from feeling cold.
In use, this is the bag I stop thinking about. The Togo grain is pebbled and dense, so the flap stays soft in the hand while shrugging off the scuffs that come with being carried daily, and the colour masks marks better than light beiges do. After a year of regular outings, the only visible change is a slight polish on the flap where my hand falls, which I like.
Contents for a working day: a medium wallet, a phone, keys, reading glasses in a soft case, a compact, a lipstick and a folded to-do list, with a thin notebook on top. The 30 is deep enough to hold all of that without bulging, and the back-wall pockets keep the small items from tumbling when you open the bag in a hurry.
The trade-off worth knowing: under artificial light Etoupe can look more grey than it does in daylight, so a bag photographed in a shop window is not quite the bag you carry outside. Once you accept that, it is the quietest, most universally useful colour in this batch.
