Tan leather, gold hardware, warm workmanship – this is the Bearn in its most traditional clothes. Epsom takes the 37 Gold dye evenly, lifting to a honey tone at the embossed grain, and the gold-tone bar under the strap picks up the same warmth so the wallet looks like one continuous object rather than leather with metal added afterwards.
Nine centimetres tall when closed, seventeen and a half wide, five deep at the gusset – the dimensions of a wallet that expects to carry an adult’s worth of paper. Banknotes lie flat along the full length, cards sit in the slots without being forced, and the coin compartment, opened out, takes a week of accumulated change without turning into a lump. It slides into a jacket pocket as easily as into the interior of a tote.
Epsom’s pressed grain makes it the most forgiving calfskin for daily use: water beads and wipes away, corners resist scuffing, and the wallet does not lose its straight lines. The honest note is that Epsom tells less of a patina story than softer leathers – it simply stays as it is. There is no ritual to keeping it this way: use it, wipe it now and then, and let Epsom do what Epsom does.
If you want a wallet that looks the same in five years as it does today, this is the leather, and this is the colour, to choose.
