Saturday, a farmers market, a denim jacket and a white tee: the In the Loop 18 in 75 Blue Jean was made for that photograph, and it knows it. The colour is a true jeans blue, deeper than sky, a little dustier than royal, and it is the closest a leather bag gets to denim without being denim.
The shell measures eighteen centimetres wide and about nineteen and a half from the loop to the base, with a twelve-centimetre gusset that gives it a generous mouth. Clemence, a pebbled bull calfskin with a spongy surface, makes the whole thing feel unforced: the body dimples where I set it down and springs back when I pick it up. Gold hardware adds just enough warmth to keep the blue from going cold.
Inside on a normal Saturday: a paperback, a wallet, keys and a tube of sun cream in summer. It is a bag that encourages you to carry less and walk further, which is the point of a Saturday. In autumn it gets a folded scarf instead, and the blue looks even better against wool than against cotton.
Two honest caveats. Blue Jean is casual by nature; in tailoring it reads like jeans with a blazer, which some rooms do not appreciate. And the loop handle invites hand-carrying, so the strap spends most of its life folded inside. I have made my peace with both; the colour pays me back every weekend.
