Two versions of the same taupe exist in my cupboard, and the difference is entirely the hardware. Where gold makes Etoupe feel like a well-worn travelling coat, the silver fittings on this In the Loop 18 turn it cooler and crisper, closer to tailoring than to luggage. It is the one I carry to the office, and its cool metal is also what makes it work with denim, which the warmer version does only half-heartedly.
The bag is unchanged: eighteen centimetres across the top, a shade under twenty with the loop, twelve deep, one open compartment, a pebbled and spongy Clemence body that compresses when it is hugged and springs back when set down. The silvery metalwork is minimal enough that the taupe keeps the stage, and the tone stays neutral under every light I have worked in.
Inside on a Tuesday: laptop-free by design, so a notebook, a wallet, a phone, keys and a fountain pen in a slip. A cardigan folds on top for cold offices and the bucket still closes softly around it. The loop handle earns its keep exactly here, on desks and canteen trays.
Honest note: the lighter the leather, the more the handle and base will darken over years of handling, a slow patina rather than a defect. Etoupe carries it beautifully. Just do not buy it expecting it to stay pristine, because Clemence has no interest in that promise. Kept in its dust bag, mine has aged more slowly than my coffee habit deserves.
