A pale grey bag sounds like an afterthought until you carry one. Gris Pale is a dove grey with a thread of warm beige running through it, and the In the Loop 18 in this shade has done something no black bag has managed: it made my whole outfit look deliberate before I had chosen a scarf.
The numbers stay the same: eighteen centimetres wide, roughly twenty with the loop, twelve deep. What changes is the mood. Taurillon Clemence’s spongy grain keeps the pale grey from looking flat or synthetic, and the gold hardware gives the cool tone a point of warmth, like brass on a grey door. In low light the bag looks almost silver; in sun it turns to stone.
I carry it with white shirts and denim mostly, and inside it lives my lightest set: phone, cardholder, keys, a lip balm and a folded tote for groceries. The wide bucket mouth means I can reload it one-handed at a till, which matters more to me than it should. It is also the bag friends borrow for weddings.
The honest counterweight: pale leather is a record of the world. A mark from a newspaper or a seat belt is not a stain so much as an entry in the bag’s diary. If you want a bucket that absorbs a life without comment, buy Etoupe. If you want one that lights up a dark wardrobe, this is the trade, and I would make it again.
