A yellow bag sorts people quickly into two groups, and I have always been in the one that grins. Jaune Poussin is a vivid chick yellow, clean and unshaded, and on the Constance Elan 24, with its long, low proportions and silver hardware, it stops being cute and becomes a statement.
The Elan is the stretched reading of the Constance idea: twenty-four centimetres wide, just fourteen tall and eight deep, so the flap and its metal clasp dominate the face. Epsom calfskin, heat-embossed with a fine cross-grain, is rigid and holds this shape precisely; the leather will not sag, soften or lean no matter how it is worn. Morning light is kindest to it; by evening the yellow glows quietly rather than shouting.
Because the body is shallow, the Elan is a disciplined bag: a phone, keys, a cardholder, a compact and a lipstick, and it says so with its shape rather than a warning label. Worn over a coat, the yellow sits level and wide, like a panel of colour across the body, and it looks equally right with denim and with grey wool.
Two honest notes. Epsom’s stiffness is the whole trick, but it also means the bag refuses to stretch; if you tend to overpack, you will feel it. And bright yellow is a spring and summer bag for me, quiet through winter. I store it with the rest, waiting, like a coat that knows its season.
