Dark lizard is a quiet performer with a party trick. At night, the scales on this bag merge into an almost uniform grey and it looks like the most understated thing in the room. Turn it toward a winter window and every separate scale lifts up in cool silver light — the texture was there all along, waiting to be found.
The format is the classic Constance cut: a 24 by 15 cm face with five centimetres of depth, sized so a phone, cardholder, keys and lipstick occupy their own slots and nothing piles up. It tucks under a coat without a bulge, which matters through the months when I am wearing layers from October to March. The rigid frame keeps its rectangle under all of them.
Lizard — sourced from South Africa, as is standard for the material — has a natural lustre that candlelight flatters, and the silver hardware takes the same cool register. Against charcoal wool and grey cashmere it layers tone on tone; against black it sharpens. Both readings are dressier than my usual days deserve.
Care is the honest part. Tiny scales should not be starved of moisture, so I keep this bag out of direct sun and away from radiators, and I let it breathe in the dust bag when it sits out a season. Neglect, not use, is what dulls lizard. Handled well, it stays lit from within for decades.
