Garnet is the red for people who think they cannot wear red. K1 Rouge Grenat is dark, winy and slightly brown at the edges of the colour – the red of a glass of Burgundy held to a candle – and on Epsom’s matte grain it stays deep rather than turning candy-bright. With gold hardware it warms further, into something close to old lacquer.
This is a bag for evenings and cold months, though I wear it to work too, over grey and navy. The structure is pure Epsom: a firm body with a sealed surface, the flap lining up flush, nothing drooping. In this darker red, the H clasp almost disappears into the colour and reappears in the light – a nice trick of the finish.
It holds the small essentials: phone, a thin wallet, keys, lipstick, a compact mirror. I keep a lighter load in winter when the coat pockets take some of the burden. The strap falls at a high crossbody, keeping the bag in view and out of the way at the same time.
The part people rarely mention: very dark reds are notorious for showing the fine surface scuffs that lighter or brighter leathers hide, and Epsom is no exception. A mark on Rouge Grenat shows as a lighter trace, especially near the flap edge. The flip side is that the bag photographs like a different, more expensive object in low light – and my clients agree. Keep a soft cloth handy and it stays immaculate.
