Can one bag cover a Monday meeting, a Thursday dinner and a Saturday errand? The Bolide 31 in 89 Noir Epsom with gold hardware makes the best case I can find. The shape is discreet — a domed zip bag, thirty-one centimetres long, twenty-five tall, twelve deep — and the black embossed calfskin asks no questions about dress codes.
I packed it through a week of mixed days: laptop, charger pouch, notebook and a spare shirt on work days; wallet, keys and sunglasses on the weekend; a folded wrap for the restaurant, in the knowledge that the bag would look equally at home there. Epsom keeps its shape through all of it — no sag after a heavy day, no creasing at the handle in rain.
Gold hardware on black is the classic of classics, warmer and a touch more formal than silver; the full-width zip is the only real metalwork and it runs cleanly. The top handle takes a gloved hand, and the strap sits comfortably over a winter coat.
Honest notes, two. Black Epsom shows dust and lint more than people expect, so a weekly buff with a soft cloth keeps it looking deliberate. And the gold makes the bag read slightly dressier than a matte black-and-silver pairing would; if you want invisible utility, the silver version treads softer.
As a single, do-everything bag, I have not found better at this size, and I have looked.
