Blue Jean is the colour that made denim cultural currency in leather, and thirty-odd years later it still looks best the way it always did: with white, with grey, and with other blues handled carefully. On this Bolide 27 in taurillon clemence the blue is mid-tone and soft, slightly faded, exactly like a good pair of jeans after two washes.
Clemence gives the twenty-seven centimetre dome a relaxed posture — it slouches, it creases, it looks like it has always been yours. A day’s kit fits easily: pouch, sunglasses, wallet, phone, keys and a paperback. The full-width zip is easy to work one-handed, and the silver hardware stays quiet and cool.
The size handles travel well, too. On a short trip it doubled as my personal item, holding documents, a small camera and a folded scarf, while the strap distributed the weight better than I expected from a soft bag.
Honest notes. Composition first: blue leather with blue denim is a look that divides people — I like it, but if you want the bag to contrast rather than echo, wear it with cream, grey and camel instead. Second, pale denim against this leather is fine, but raw denim is not; keep the two apart. And clemence holds a crease once it takes one, so embrace it or choose the Epsom versions.
As an everyday bag with a holiday soul, it earns its keep from May to September especially — and holds its own in January, too.
