Mauve Pâle is a whisper of a colour — dusty rose with grey in it, closer to pressed hydrangea than to pink — and in Swift calfskin’s silky surface on this Bolide 27 it looks almost poured rather than stitched. I wore it to a spring lunch with a pale grey suit, and the combination felt finished before I had decided anything.
Swift makes the structure soft: the twenty-seven by twenty by ten centimetre dome drapes slightly, the zip closes easily, and the whole bag weighs less than the Epsom versions — a difference you feel by mid-afternoon. Capacity is a proper day’s: wallet, phone, keys, a pouch, sunglasses bare and a small notebook.
Silver hardware is the correct register for Mauve Pâle; gold would tip it sweet. The strap and handle both work, and the colour plays well with navy, grey, cream and — for the brave — rust.
Honest notes, two. Swift is smooth, and pale smooth leather is the most mark-visible combination in this entire line: pens, receipts and keys all leave traces, and sun and heat will warm the colour over the years. This is a bag to own with your eyes open and your pockets tidy. Second, the soft body means the bag does not stand upright when empty; lean it, do not stand it.
Looked after, though, it is the most romantic bag here — a piece of quiet weather that goes wherever spring does.
