Craie is chalk — warm white with the faintest sand cast — and on this Bolide 27 in Togo’s pebble grain it is the colour that turns a plain summer wardrobe into a considered one. I carried it through a June of weddings and terraces, and what surprised me was not its brightness but its calm: against linen, against denim, against every white shirt I own, it never looked like it was trying.
Togo’s texture works in cream’s favour: the pebbled surface scatters light, so dust and fingerprint-level marks are far less obvious than on smooth pale leathers. The bag is the standard twenty-seven by twenty by ten centimetres — wallet, phone, keys, pouch, sunglasses, paperback — with a zip that runs sweetly around the soft dome.
Gold hardware warms the chalk rather than contrasting with it; the metal nearly vanishes, leaving a bag that reads as one pale object from a distance.
Honest note, and it is the big one for cream: transfer. Dark denim, new leather jackets, patent straps and freshly conditioned car seats are all hazards, and the base corners are where they land first. Togo is more forgiving than most, but this is a bag to carry knowingly, keep in its dust bag, and wipe at the end of long days. Sunlight will also deepen Craie gradually toward a soft bone — gracefully, in my experience, but not imperceptibly.
Own it with a care kit and a relaxed attitude, and it justifies every light-coloured cliché it avoids.
