There is a particular pleasure in jewellery that no one else notices until they are standing close to you. This small Mini Maillon is that kind of piece: a single link 0.79 of an inch tall, rose gold plated, on a chain that slides between 16.5 and 18.9 inches so you choose the drop yourself.
I have been wearing mine most days for half a year, and what I like is the restraint. Because the pendant is a link, the necklace looks like part of a longer chain that has been interrupted, and that reads as considered rather than decorative.
It layers beautifully with pearls, oddly enough, and better still with a second fine chain in a warmer or cooler metal, where the maillon sits in the middle like punctuation. Alone, with a plain black dress, it is the only thing I need.
Two trade-offs. At this size it can disappear under a heavy scarf or inside a high collar, so it lives on my neck more in summer than winter; and the plating, not solid gold, means the shine is a finish rather than a fact of the metal. Made in France.
Two habits keep a pendant this size looking new: fasten it before you do your hair, since a chain this fine tangles in combs, and turn the link so its oval face sits outward, which is the side polished to catch light. The plating has held up well over six months of that routine.
