The best wallet I have carried these past few seasons is also one of the quietest: the Béarn Compact in black Epsom. At roughly 12 by 9.5 centimetres it slips into a mini bag, a coat pocket or even the back pocket of jeans — and unlike so many “compact” wallets, it doesn’t punish you for leaving the big one at home.
Open it and the layout does the work: four card slots, four flat pockets and a full-length bill compartment hold the everyday stack — cards, folded notes, a couple of receipts — without turning into a brick. The closure is the Béarn’s signature: a leather tab with an openwork H that slides under a gold-tone bar, a mechanism that shuts with the same crisp feel every single time. It’s the kind of detail you find yourself fidgeting with at the checkout counter.
Epsom was the right call for a wallet. The embossed cross-grain is scratch-resistant and simply doesn’t pick up careless marks the way smooth calfskin does; in black it wipes clean and hides the wear that comes from living in a pocket. Corner scuffs, if they ever come, are a matter of a fingertip of conditioning cream.
If your bags keep getting smaller, this is the wallet that keeps up. It has survived my switch to a mini bag, a travel season and a hundred coffee counters without a single moment of wishing I had brought the long one.
