Everything on this Mona is black: Swift calfskin above, leather sole, edge and heel below, lambskin lining within. The only variation is texture, glassy upper against the softer burnish of the sole, and that restraint is what sets it apart from every other black sandal I have tried.
Swift is a dense, fine-grained calfskin with a surface that looks almost liquid in the right light, and it takes dye evenly, which is why this black runs so deep rather than greyish. The sandal itself sits flat and uncomplicated on the foot.
Mine are the pair I keep for city evenings and for travel, when I want to look decided without looking dressed up. Sizes run 36 to 41. They take a coat check, a taxi and a long walk home without any of it showing on my face.
The one honest drawback of smooth black leather is how it behaves in daylight: every scuff shows as a faint grey line and dust is visible immediately, so these need more wiping than any suede pair. On the other hand, a minute with black cream restores them completely, which suede can never promise.
Over a year, the upper has softened across the toes and kept its depth, and the sole has burnished to a dull, even black. Made in Italy. The plainest sandal here, and for some weeks of the year, the only one I want.
