The first thing you notice about the Noir pair is the scale. Shiny Java lizard takes light like lacquer, dark in shadow and brilliant in sun, while the calfskin sections of the upper stay matte so nothing looks costumey. On my medium-width foot, sizes 36 to 41 fit true.
I wear these with wide trousers for errands and with a slip dress for dinner, and they carry both because the sole stays low and quiet. The anatomical rubber sole arcs under the midfoot, cups the heel and holds half an inch of lift, so an afternoon on paving never becomes a countdown. Inside, black calfskin lines the footbed and lambskin lines the upper, which is why they work without socks.
New, expect firmness at the strap. Lizard maps your foot slowly; give it three or four outings and it softens only where you press. The crease afterwards stays exactly where it formed, which I prefer to leather that slumps after a month of wear.
The honest part: scale records knocks. Gravel, car doors, a careless toe, this leather remembers all of it. I keep mine for pavements and terraces, never the beach, and I never let them sit damp. A dry cloth after each wear is the entire routine; lizard does not want cream.
Three summers in, my pair has one crease at the strap and a gloss that has not dulled. If you like the shape but want fewer rules, the suede Chypres in the same family forgive far more. For a black sandal with texture worth looking at up close, this is the pair I reach for first.
