Grey beige is the colour you notice a year later. It has none of the immediate charm of a bright sandal, and then you realise you have reached for it every second morning because it never clashes with anything you own.
This Chypre is built on the standard template – calfskin strap across the foot, adjustable closure, anatomical rubber sole with a black outsole and black calfskin insole – but the lining here is esquisse grey beige lambskin, softer and smoother than the goatskin used on many colourways. Sizes run 36 to 41.
I wore mine to a long summer wedding, the sort that starts with a ceremony on grass and ends with dancing on a terrace, and the sandal looked appropriate for all of it. The lambskin lining was the detail I appreciated most by midnight: no friction, no break-in drama, nothing to think about.
The tone does the heavy lifting outfit-wise. It sits between stone and grey enough to pair with both, so I wore it with a beige slip dress one day and charcoal linen the next, and it looked intentional with each. The black sole grounds the pale upper without making it look sporty.
One thing to watch: pale linings and straps show wear sooner than dark ones, and the buckle hole you settle on will stretch and darken with use. Neither bothers me, but if you want a sandal that stays pristine, a darker colourway in the same shape is the safer pick. One more small thing: the buckle arrived slightly stiff and eased after a fortnight of wear.
