Most black card holders are interchangeable, and this is not one of them: Box calfskin gives the black a lacquer-like depth, so the piece looks like polished stone rather than the matte fabric-covered cases that dominate the category.
The Calvi Duo at 7 by 10 by 2 cm is a compact card holder for people who have accepted that a wallet should not have to hold a decade of receipts. Two compartments separate the cards you use from the ones you keep, notes fold into the middle, and silver hardware marks the closure. It sits flat in a shirt or jacket pocket and vanishes into a small evening bag without taking up room you wanted for lipstick.
Two things to know before you commit. Box calf’s gloss shows scratches more than a grained surface does, and it is the one leather in my collection that I keep away from rain, because water leaves marks on smooth calf if it is not blotted immediately. What you get in return is the most refined finish available at this size and a surface that can be refreshed with a cloth and a little wax rather than replaced. Mine is four years old and still glossy.
For evenings, weddings and any occasion that calls for black rather than a pattern, it is the most understated thing in my drawer. It is also the piece people pick up first when they look at my desk.
