Gris Etain means tin grey, and this is exactly that: a cool grey with a metallic patience to it, never blue and never green, the sort of neutral that makes other colours look intentional. In Togo’s pebbled grain the surface has real texture, so the shade shifts with the light instead of sitting flat.
The wallet is the Constance To Go at 20 by 3.5 by 12 cm. Cards, notes and coins fit as they should, the enamel fitting closes the flap, and the strap lets it travel as a small shoulder piece. I have carried mine to meetings and to dinners without changing anything except the strap, which is the point of the design. The tin grey has proved practical in both settings, which is more than I expected from a colour this elegant.
Two practical observations. Togo is softer than pressed-grain calf, so this wallet feels gentler in the hand and holds its shape a little more loosely with age. And mid-greys show greasy fingerprints at the clasp more than black does, so a wipe with a soft cloth keeps the flap looking clean. After a year and a half the grain has not flattened anywhere, and the tin grey has not discoloured at the corners or stained from a rain shower.
Wear it with charcoal, navy or camel. It will look like it belongs to someone who does not need to be loud.
