Dove grey over alligator is a combination that sounds quiet and is not: the grey softens the formality of the scales, and the gold hardware adds the only warmth the colorway has. Carried to a daytime event it looks considered rather than borrowed.
The pochette runs 22 cm across and 12 cm tall with 7 cm of depth, and the single top handle is short enough to hook over the wrist when both hands are needed. Inside goes a phone, cards, a key pouch and a lipstick; the flap sits over them without a fight, and the 7 cm body gives it more real depth than most evening bags.
Alligator from Mississippi is the firmest, most architectural leather here. Its plates are wide and evenly spaced, and they hold the pochette’s lines whether the bag is full or empty. The honest note is that it needs a home: on a shelf, out of the sun, away from radiators, and occasionally fed with conditioner, because dry alligator is the only kind that cracks.
Gold against dove grey is the detail I notice most, the clasp glowing pale against the scales.
I pair it the way I wear it: with a dove grey dress in summer, or with charcoal wool and a camel coat in winter, where the pale scale work reads almost like jewellery. It is the exotic I would hand to someone who worries that crocodile always looks too serious for daylight. For lunches it has been my quiet default for two summers.
