Gris Meyer is the lightest grey in this collection – a pale, slightly cool tone, like a sky ten minutes before rain. It keeps Epsom’s pressed grain honest and even, and silver hardware is the only logical finish for it. If you want a wallet that says nothing and does everything, this is that wallet.
Three and a half inches tall when closed, and a hand’s length across, it has room for notes, six to eight cards, coins in the gusset and the sort of paper clutter that accumulates between clean-outs. It has lived in my coat pocket for a whole commuting month, in and out at ticket barriers and coffee counters, without a single complaint.
The trade-off with pale grey is fingerprints, and the honest way to handle them is a dry cloth once a week rather than letting them build up into a grey film along the fold. There is one subtler thing worth knowing as well: against warm beige or camel clothing, Gris Meyer can look faintly blue. It is a quiet effect, but if you are matching it to suits, match it to cool tones.
Epsom does not absorb much, so rain and spilled coffee wipe away if you get to them the same day.
A quiet wallet, the way a good grey suit is a quiet suit. It has never once been the wrong thing to pull out.
