Ebene is almost black until sunlight finds it, and then it is deep coffee. I only understood the color on a January morning, on a station platform, when low light came in and turned the whole bag warm.
It is a Cargo 25: swift body, canvas pockets, silver hardware, and the usual travel contents, passport, cards, phone, earphones, each with a home. Dark brown is the most forgiving leather color I own; a scratch on Ebene is a rumor.
In use it is the bag I take when the forecast is honest about rain. The canvas shrugs off a shower better than saddle-toned leathers, the swift wipes dry, and the pockets stay flat because nothing in them gathers bulk. I have walked it through two weeks of drizzle in the north, and the only evidence is a soft sheen at the handles, which suits it.
Honest note: Ebene asks whether you mix dark brown with black. I do, happily, with tailoring; some people find the combination muddy and this bag will not change their mind. It also keeps its details hidden in low light, so the pockets are more useful to you than to the observer.
It is the version of the Cargo that whispers. For winter, airports and long days in the city, it is the one I reach for first. Even the interior stays presentable, which is more than I can say for most of my cold-weather bags.
