Putty in daylight, cocoa in lamplight: Etoupe never quite decides, and that is exactly why I recommend it. It is the chameleon of the color range, and on the 40 it turns a serious bag approachable.
Sized 40 by 30 by 21, this Togo build takes a laptop, folio, chargers and a change of shirt without a strategy; I have used it as a work bag for days and as hand luggage for weekends, and I packed it in ten minutes for a two-day trip in March without missing a second bag.
Day to day, the gold hardware warms the grey-brown and keeps it from reading cold, while the pebbled grain hides the wipe marks of travel better than any smooth leather would. The rolled handles take a heavy load without cutting, which I notice most on a packed commute.
Honest notes: chameleon colors are hard to dress for; a scarf that looks perfect in the shop can argue with Etoupe at home, and photos of it never agree with the eye. In some light mine looks grey, in others brown, and I pack accordingly; I have learned to photograph it only in daylight, where the brown agrees with the camera. Togo still slouches when half empty.
Worn with navy, grey, cream and denim it goes everywhere I go. It is the one color I would keep if a dozen had to become one, and I have never once regretted its neutrality.
