White leather asks a question: are you the kind of person who can carry white leather? The Shoulder Birkin 42 in Blanc answers for you. On a recent trip along the coast I carried it for a week of ferries, terraces and long walks, and the bag never once looked out of place, which is more than I can say for my shoes.
Clemence in white is soft, lightly grained and a shade off pure snow; it reads as cream in lamplight and as chalk in the sun. The silver hardware keeps the whole thing cool and clean. With linen shirts and faded denim the bag looks like part of the wardrobe rather than an accessory. The Sojourn marking sets it apart from the standard colourway line, and I like that it is very slightly the underdog of the family.
Capacity, as with every 42cm Shoulder Birkin, is excellent: wallet, phone, camera, a beach read, sun cream, a rolled scarf, all sitting flat at the base while the bag hangs at my side with both handles doing nothing. The leather warms and softens in the sun, and the shape relaxes quietly over a long day out.
The honest note is about upkeep. White Clemence picks up indigo from new denim and red from a lipstick cap, so I keep a leather wipe in the interior and treat the bag before the first trip. It will never stay perfect, but a white bag with a faint history still photographs better than most things I own.
