Describe Etoupe to someone who has never seen it and you will fail twice: it is not quite grey, not quite taupe, and not quite the colour of anything else you own. That slipperiness is the appeal. On a Maxi 42, the shade shifts through the day, reading mushroom grey in morning light and warmer, almost greenish against dark wood in the evening, while the white contrast stitching draws the panels out like ink lines.
The size makes sense of it. This is the 42 by 16 by 28 cm working Kelly, which in Etoupe stops looking like a serious business bag and starts looking like a soft trunk that happens to carry a week of work. A laptop, document folders and a notebook fit upright, and the turn-lock gives quick access to all of it. Togo’s grain absorbs the knocks of daily commutes, and with Etoupe you simply do not see light scuffs.
Silver hardware is the natural partner; the cool metal lets the grey stay neutral instead of turning muddy, and it matches watches and jewellery in white metal. I wear mine with charcoal tailoring through the week and with oatmeal knitwear at weekends.
One caveat worth knowing: contrast stitching on a light-toned leather shows any dirt drawn into the thread, so keep an eye on the flap edges and brush them gently now and then. And because Etoupe flatters almost everything, do not be surprised if it slowly becomes the only bag you reach for. Mine has.
