Kitten-soft grain versus pressed grain: the same Etain looks like two different colours depending on the leather, and in Epsom it turns cooler and more precise. The embossed surface bounces light instead of absorbing it, so the grey reads cleaner next to wool suits and navy, especially under office lighting.
Epsom is the rigid member of the family – heat-embossed, firm, and famously indifferent to scratches and light rain. Wiping a dried coffee ring off mine took one damp cloth and no drama. I have carried mine through two seasons of meetings, and the structure is exactly as it was on day one.
The 32 by 23 by 10.5 centimetre body swallows a day’s work – tablet, notebook, pouch, keys and a small water bottle with room to spare. Silver hardware keeps the whole picture cool, which suits the cooler cast of this colour, and the strap can be run short on the shoulder or left at home entirely.
One honest note: rigid leather means knocks on the corners are unforgiving. Epsom protects itself from marks but not from dents, so mind doorways and car doors. A corner of mine met an overhead locker once, on a busy flight, and I have padded it inside a soft canvas sleeve in transit ever since.
If you want the structure people recognise from photographs of this shape – the standing flap, the crisp spine – Epsom is where you find it.
