Rouge Sellier is the deep red-brown of old saddlery, and in the 36 it looks like it knows things. This is not a loud red. It is dark, warm and inky, the sort of color that reads brown in one room and wine in another, and Vache Country’s firm grain gives it exactly the gravity that kind of name deserves.
Thirty-six by twenty-six by seventeen centimeters of firm country leather, with a silver snap at the top and nothing else competing. The shape holds like a briefcase and carries like a tote, which is the whole trick of this size. I have used it for work days, gallery visits and overnight trains, and it looked like it belonged at all three.
Inside on a working day: a 13-inch laptop in a sleeve, a notebook, a charger, a document folder, keys, wallet and a bottle of water. Everything sits in one layer, nothing stacked so deep that it has to be excavated. The open top keeps it all reachable, and the interior pocket keeps small things off the laptop screen.
Two honest points about a 36 in firm leather. Empty, it is a big bag and it will look big, so it rewards being filled sensibly. Fully loaded, Vache Country’s structure plus the contents add up on the shoulder by late afternoon. My rule: briefcase on heavy days, tote on light ones, and it earns its keep in both roles.
