Blue Hydra is the color you pack before you have booked the holiday. It is a bright, saturated turquoise that leans green in the sun and blue in the shade, and it does not try to be a neutral.
That boldness is exactly what makes it work in a large tote. I take mine to the coast as a beach bag that doubles as a personal item, and a size that measures thirty-six centimeters across takes sunscreen, a towel, two paperbacks and a hat without complaint. Folded into a suitcase, it fills the space of a couple of shirts.
Negonda’s soft, matte calfskin keeps the blue from looking plasticky; there is a slight haze to the finish that reads as leather even at a distance. The silver hardware is the correct metal for a cool color, and it stays bright against the turquoise. Up close the grain is fine and even, the kind that takes dye deeply and holds it.
The honest note is about attention. This bag gets compliments in the street and it does not blend into an office; if your wardrobe is all gray and camel, the bag will be the only event in the outfit. Bright dyed calfskin can also show edge wear earlier than black, so I keep the corners clean and out of abrasion’s way.
It is the antidote to an over-serious bag collection. I recommend it as exactly that. Take it where the sun is.
