Canvas makes sense in a small bag: when the size is this polite, leather can start to feel like a costume. Denim Moyen gives the Neo Garden Party 23 its medium-blue woven body and Noir calfskin trim, and the whole thing weighs next to nothing before you fill it.
Mine rides into weekends. The bag spans twenty-three by sixteen by ten centimeters, taking phone, wallet, keys and sunglasses fine, with a paperback sliding in last and still allowing the tabs to meet. It carries like a clutch with a handle, which is exactly what a Saturday needs from a bag.
The leather parts are where your hand goes: handles and the trim around the opening are Negonda calfskin, while the field of the bag is cloth, which is why it takes a shower better than the fabric’s reputation suggests and dries quickly in the air. Silver hardware at the tabs sits cool against the denim blue.
Honest notes for a canvas bag: woven material holds fine dust, and this mid-blue shows pale marks where a leather bag would hide them. It also fades, gently and evenly, like jeans, which I happen to like, but which is not for people who want decade-old crispness. No shoulder strap either, which I count as a point in its favor; the Neo 23 is hand carry by nature.
For lunches, markets and light travel, it is the bag that never drags on my arm.
