Green bags have a reputation problem, and Vert Cypres is my answer to it. This is a deep, blue-leaning pine, the green of a fir tree in shade, and with gold hardware it reads closer to a neutral than a statement. I have worn it through four seasons without a single month of feeling out of step.
Clemence makes the color quiet rather than loud; the pebble is pronounced on this piece, and the matte surface absorbs light instead of throwing it back. The proportions are eighteen by sixteen centimeters, with five of depth, and it takes a wallet, a phone, a key pouch and a lipstick, and the soft body means it never sits rigidly away from the hip.
If you are deciding between this and black, choose the green only if you genuinely enjoy a hint of color, because in dim light it does the job of black and nobody but you will notice the difference. That is the honest trade of a dark green: subtlety in exchange for a little more life than black offers.
Tailoring is where it earns its keep. Against grey flannel, navy wool or a camel coat, the deep green looks considered without being dressed up, and the gold hardware warms the whole picture. On weekends it works with denim just as easily. It is the bag I wear when I want to look like I chose my clothes on purpose.
