The Messenger 39 is the largest bag I carry, and the only one in my closet I would call a work bag. Thirty-nine by thirty-one by fifteen centimeters swallows a laptop in its sleeve, a notebook, a water bottle and the usual cable tangle, and the wide strap distributes the weight well enough for a long commute on foot.
The two-part build is the Herbag signature: a canvas body slots into a leather top and is held there by the front straps, so the bag has structure exactly where it needs it, at the handle and the flap, and give everywhere else. Lifting the canvas out to swap or clean it is the kind of detail that makes the design feel honest rather than decorative.
The H Viking canvas is a heavier weave with a visible texture, and in Craie it is chalk against the gold leather trim, with silver hardware keeping the whole thing from getting sweet. Two tones, done quietly, which is harder than it sounds when one of them is white. I have carried mine through two springs and the canvas has not pilled or faded.
The trade-offs are real: the flap closes with two strap-and-tab fittings, so opening the bag in a crowd takes both hands, and pale canvas deserves a protective spray before its first winter. What you get in return is a bag that looks better the more structured your life is, and mine has never once looked tired on a Monday morning.
