Nata is cream in its cleanest form: warm and soft, the color of the thick layer at the top of fresh milk. I keep this size for dinners, gallery openings and any evening where the only essentials are the ones that fit in one hand.
At eighteen centimetres across and thirteen tall, this is the smallest Picotin, and it plays by different rules than its bigger relatives. A phone, a cardholder, keys and a lipstick go in; a full-size wallet does not. The leather is soft Clemence, unlined, so the little bucket holds its shape just long enough to look tidy and then relaxes against your hand. Nothing about it is stiff, including the handles, which bend easily into a fist.
Gold hardware gives the cream a warm edge, and the lock on its leather tab is proportionally the largest detail on the bag, which suits it. The two short handles are the bag’s entire architecture, and they sit comfortably in the palm. On a wrist at a dinner table, it looks like an ornament that happens to hold your keys.
The honest arithmetic of the 18: it is a bag for defined outings, not for the day you might also need a notebook and a charger. Buy it knowing that, and it becomes the easiest thing in your closet to pick up on the way out of the door, or as I think of it, the bag for the plans you actually keep.
