Mauve gets called dusty, which does it an injustice. X9 Mauve is really a greyed rose — pink with the sugar taken out — and on pebbled leather the grey wins just often enough to keep men in the same conversation as it keeps me.
This is the Picotin Lock 18 in Taurillon Clemence, a palm and a half across and soft the moment you pick it up, thanks to the leather’s thick, uneven grain. The rolled handle and the little lock plate at the top are the whole mechanism; the bucket itself does the rest, slouching a little differently each day. Silver hardware keeps the rose from going sweet.
I wear it mainly against denim and chambray — the grey in the mauve answers the blue in the fabric — and it carries a phone, a cardholder, keys and a lipstick without any of them fighting for space. Weekends, lunches, gallery afternoons: this is that bag.
It bridges pale trousers and dark jackets without matching either, which is the quiet service of a good muted tone. A drop of leather balm at the handle seam once a year and that is the whole maintenance story.
Honest note number one: pale mauve is not a colour to trust beside brand-new indigo or a dark leather jacket, at least not pressed against them repeatedly. And as with any Clemence piece, the shape will soften rather than hold — carry it happily, store it stuffed, and the slouch stays charming instead of tired.
